Mu'alim al-Qur'an - Connecting People with The Qur'an

Lesson No. 1
Nouns and Adjectives

Arabic nouns and adjectives can be definite or indefinite

(Tanwin) indicates whether the word is indefinite. Example addition of (Oon ٌ ) to the end of the word.
أَجْرٌ
a reward
عَذَابٌ
a punishment
كِتَابٌ
a scripture, document
آيَةٌ
a sign, verse
رَحْمَةٌ
a mercy
قُرْآنٌ
a recitation
Indefinite words with no (Tanwin) can be learned by experience.
آخَرُ
other
أَوَّلُ
first

Nouns can be made definite by preceding them with the definite article (the) or following the genitive of possession.
THE DEFINITE ARTICLE
The definite article ال (al) is added as a prefix to a word.
اَلْبَلَدُ
the town
اَلْعَذَابُ
the punishment
As per Arabic phonetic theory. This vowel is used at the beginning of a sentence. It can also be replaced by a joining sign (wasla), linking the ل (L) of the article to the final vowel of the preceding word. In other words, the ال (al) can be found at the beginning, and elsewhere in the sentence/verse.
اَلْكِتَابُ اَلْمُبِينُ
the clear book
The definite article requires two manipulations. The second is tricky, but you will get used to it.
1- When it precedes the moon letters, the ل (L) of the definite article is pronounced as ل (L) with a (sukun) written over it.
اَلْيَوْمُ
the day
اَلْكِتَابُ
the document
2- For other letters (sun letters), the pronunciation of the ل (L) is assimilated to the sound of the following consonant.
اَلرَّحْمَةُ
the mercy
اَلرَّسُولُ
the messenger
Unlike modern Arabic, only one ل (lam) is written when the article is prefixed to a word beginning with another ل (lam) according to the Quran.
اَلَّيْلُ
the night
Always remember that if a word has the definite article, it cannot also have tanwin. (Words cannot be definite and indefinite at the same time).

Allahu, meaning “The God”, is a combination of definite article ال (al) and إِلَهٌ (ilahun), with the initial hamza (إِ) dropped. It is written without long vowel indication in some version of Qur'an.

Words in Arabic are masculine unless there are feminine because of form, meaning, category or convention.
A small number of words are feminine through meaning.
أُمٌّ
mother
أَرْضٌ
earth
Some feminine words occasionally have (Toon ةٌ) endings, such as:
اَلْآيَةُ
the sign, the verse
آيَةٌ
a sign, a verse
اَلرَّحْمَةُ
the mercy
رَحْمَةٌ
a mercy
There are a few masculine words with the (Toon ةٌ) ending, but the only common one is خَلِيفَةٌ a caliph.
Feminine adjectives can be formed from masculine ones by adding the (Toon ةٌ).
اَلْكَبِيرُ
masculine
كَبِيرٌ
masculine
اَلْكَبِيرَةُ
feminine
كَبِيرَةٌ
feminine
اَلشَّدِيدُ
masculine
شَدِيدٌ
masculine
اَلشَّدِيدَةُ
feminine
شَدِيدَةٌ
feminine

Adjectives follow and agree with nouns in definiteness, gender, number, and case.
اَلْفَوْزُ اَلْعَظِيمُ
the great victory
اَلْيَوْمُ اَلْآخِرُ
the last day
قُرْآنٌ مُبِينٌ
a clear recitation
رَحْمَةٌ واسِعَةٌ
a widespread mercy

Arabic can create a simple meaningful sentence without a verb. Only a noun and an adjective.
اَللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ
God is mighty
اَللَّهُ قَوِيٌّ
God is strong
اَللَّهُ قَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٌ
God is powerful and mighty
In Arabic, adjectives are linked with single-letter words (و wa) which cannot be written separately.

The vocabulary that accompanies each lesson is intended to include all the words you need to understand the examples in the text of the lesson and to do the translation exercise that follows it. To make progress you will have to learn the vocabulary of each lesson as you come to it.

الٓر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ٱلْمُبِينِ
Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book.
O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture and overlooking much. There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book.
قَالَتْ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمَلَؤُا۟ إِنِّىٓ أُلْقِىَ إِلَىَّ كِتَـٰبٌ كَرِيمٌ
She said, "O eminent ones, indeed, to me has been delivered a noble letter.
الٓر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ وَقُرْءَانٍ مُّبِينٍ
Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur'an.
قٓ ۚ وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ ٱلْمَجِيدِ
Qaf. By the honored Qur'an...
إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ
Indeed, it is a noble Qur'an
بَلْ هُوَ قُرْءَانٌ مَّجِيدٌ
But this is an honored Qur'an
وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَـٰكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ ٱلْمَثَانِى وَٱلْقُرْءَانَ ٱلْعَظِيمَ
And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur'an.
فَإِن كَذَّبُوكَ فَقُل رَّبُّكُمْ ذُو رَحْمَةٍ وَٰسِعَةٍ وَلَا يُرَدُّ بَأْسُهُۥ عَنِ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
So if they deny you, [O Muhammad], say, "Your Lord is the possessor of vast mercy; but His punishment cannot be repelled from the people who are criminals."
وَٱضْمُمْ يَدَكَ إِلَىٰ جَنَاحِكَ تَخْرُجْ بَيْضَآءَ مِنْ غَيْرِ سُوٓءٍ ءَايَةً أُخْرَىٰ
And draw in your hand to your side; it will come out white without disease - another sign,
And [mention] when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this a secure city and provide its people with fruits - whoever of them believes in Allah and the Last Day." [Allah] said. "And whoever disbelieves - I will grant him enjoyment for a little; then I will force him to the punishment of the Fire, and wretched is the destination."
And [saying], "Seek forgiveness of your Lord and repent to Him, [and] He will let you enjoy a good provision for a specified term and give every doer of favor his favor. But if you turn away, then indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a great Day.
مَتَـٰعٌ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا ثُمَّ إِلَيْنَا مَرْجِعُهُمْ ثُمَّ نُذِيقُهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلشَّدِيدَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْفُرُونَ
[For them is brief] enjoyment in this world; then to Us is their return; then We will make them taste the severe punishment because they used to disbelieve
قُلْ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ إِنْ عَصَيْتُ رَبِّى عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
Say, "Indeed I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day."
مِن قَبْلُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَأَنزَلَ ٱلْفُرْقَانَ ۗ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ ذُو ٱنتِقَامٍ
Before, as guidance for the people. And He revealed the Qur'an. Indeed, those who disbelieve in the verses of Allah will have a severe punishment, and Allah is exalted in Might, the Owner of Retribution.
ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَجَابُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱلرَّسُولِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَآ أَصَابَهُمُ ٱلْقَرْحُ ۚ لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ وَٱتَّقَوْا۟ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ
Those [believers] who responded to Allah and the Messenger after injury had struck them. For those who did good among them and feared Allah is a great reward -
مَّن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يُقْرِضُ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا فَيُضَـٰعِفَهُۥ لَهُۥ وَلَهُۥٓ أَجْرٌ كَرِيمٌ
Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He will multiply it for him and he will have a noble reward?
خَتَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَعَلَىٰ سَمْعِهِمْ ۖ وَعَلَىٰٓ أَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ غِشَـٰوَةٌ ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ
Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment.
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةٌ وَأَجْرٌ كَبِيرٌ
Except for those who are patient and do righteous deeds; those will have forgiveness and great reward.
إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.
وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَجَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ كَرِيمٌ
And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger,
وَهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ٱلْأَمِينِ
And [by] this secure city [Makkah],
ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْعَلُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۚ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
Who make [equal] with Allah another deity. But they are going to know.
بَلْ مَتَّعْتُ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ وَءَابَآءَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ جَآءَهُمُ ٱلْحَقُّ وَرَسُولٌ مُّبِينٌ
However, I gave enjoyment to these [people of Makkah] and their fathers until there came to them the truth and a clear Messenger.
هُوَ ٱلْأَوَّلُ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرُ وَٱلظَّـٰهِرُ وَٱلْبَاطِنُ ۖ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ
He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is, of all things, Knowing.
وَهُوَ ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ لَهُ ٱلْحَمْدُ فِى ٱلْأُولَىٰ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ وَلَهُ ٱلْحُكْمُ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ
And He is Allah; there is no deity except Him. To Him is [due all] praise in the first [life] and the Hereafter. And His is the [final] decision, and to Him you will be returned.
فَإِن زَلَلْتُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَتْكُمُ ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتُ فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ
But if you deviate after clear proofs have come to you, then know that Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
كَدَأْبِ ءَالِ فِرْعَوْنَ ۙ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَوِىٌّ شَدِيدُ ٱلْعِقَابِ
[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and of those before them. They disbelieved in the signs of Allah, so Allah seized them for their sins. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and severe in penalty.
كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَأَغْلِبَنَّ أَنَا۠ وَرُسُلِىٓ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَوِىٌّ عَزِيزٌ
Allah has written, "I will surely overcome, I and My messengers." Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.
قَالَتْ إِحْدَىٰهُمَا يَـٰٓأَبَتِ ٱسْتَـْٔجِرْهُ ۖ إِنَّ خَيْرَ مَنِ ٱسْتَـْٔجَرْتَ ٱلْقَوِىُّ ٱلْأَمِينُ
One of the women said, "O my father, hire him. Indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and the trustworthy."
