Lesson No. 36
Conditional Sentences

Conditional sentences consist of a clause with a condition اَلشَّرْط and a main clause with a response اَلْجَوَاب.
Arab grammarians' general rules for conditionals apply to the Qur'an, with 'if' words used in a more distinctive manner.
Arabic's simple tense system limits its ability to express conditional meeting shades, but it can convey meaning through 'if' words like law, in, and idha.
  1. law indicates that the conditional proposition has not happened or will not happen.
  2. in indicates that the conditional proposition is expected to happen or has happened.
  3. The Qur'an uses idhd to indicate a certain event, with conditional force indicated through tense usage and fa- to introduce the jawab.
Qur'an does not make full use of the full range of tenses allowable under the general rules for conditional sentences.
Two other rules to know.
  1. If the short is a negative proposition, the negative is normally expressed by lam with the jussive.
  2. With in and idha the particle fa- is used to introduce the jawab if a perfect or a jussive verb is not the first element in the jawab.

  1. a) The shart is expressed by law with the perfect.
    b) law is not used with a negative proposition.
  2. If the jawab to law begins with a verb, it will be a perfect introduced by la.
  3. The shart is used to round off a verse with assonance in -un, unless it is used to avoid the jawab.
إِنَّ أَوْهَنَ اَلْبُيُوتِ لَبَيْتُ اَلْعَنْكَبُوتِ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ
The most fragile house is that of the spider, did they know.
  1. The use of wa-law as the final clause of a sentence means 'if only' or 'even if or 'although'.
وَمَا أَنْتَ بِمُؤْمِنِنْ لَنَا وَلَوْ كُنَّا صَادِقِينَ
You will not believe us although we are telling the truth.
Examples of the use of law:
لَوْ شَاءَ رَبُّكَ لَجَعَلَ اَلنَّاسَ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً
had your Lord wished, He would have made men one community.
لَوْ أَطَاعُونَا مَا قُتِلُوا
Had they obeyed us, they would not have been killed
لَوْ نَشَاءُ لَأَرَيْنَاكَهُمْ
If we wished, we would show them to you
لَوْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ هَدَانِي لَكُنتُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِينَ
If only God had guided me, I should have been one of those who protected themselves
لَوْلَا أَنَّهُ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُسَبِّحِينَ لَلَبِثَ فِي بَطْنِهِ
Had he not been one of those who glorify God, he would have lingered in its belly
مَاذَا عَلَيْهِمْ لَوْ آمَنُوا بِاللَّهِ
What harm would it do them if they were to believe in God?
لَّا يَسْتَوِي الْخَبِيثُ وَالطَّيِّبُ وَلَوْ أَعْجَبَكَ كَثْرَةُ الْخَبِيثِ
Evil and good are not equal, through the abundance of the evil may amaze you
إِنْ حِسَابُهُمْ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّي لَوْ تَشْعُرُونَ
Their accounts rests only with my Lord, if you did but know it

fa- is used to introduce jawab in most grammars, except for those beginning with imperfect, imperative, indirect command, interrogative, negative, or other particle.
إِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمْ فَسَاءَ صَبَاحُ اَلْمُنْذَرِينَ
When it descends into their courtyard, how terrible will be the morning of those who have been warned.

  1. a) In the shart the verb may be either perfect or jussive.
    b) A negative condition is expressed by in lam orby ilia.
  2. In the jawab the jussive is much more commonly used than the perfect.
  3. The only common negative in the jawab is la. Otherwise there are ma and two of lan.
  4. Reversed sentences, i.e. where the shart forms the second half of the sentence, are relatively frequent with in.
  5. The shart introduced by in rounds off a verse in assonance with -in, un:
مَتَى هذَا اَلْوَعْدُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ
When is this promise, if you are telling the truth?
إِن كَانَ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ أَتَيْنَا بِهَا
If it’s the weight of grain of mustard-seed, We will bring it
إِن قِيلَ لَكُمُ ارْجِعُوا فَارْجِعُوا
If you are told, ‘return’, return
إِنْ أَعْرَضُوا فَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ عَلَيْهِمْ حَفِيظًا
If they turn away, we have not sent you to be a guardian over them
إِن تَوَلَّوْا فَإِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ كَبِيرٍ
If you turn your back, I fear for you the punishment of a great day
إِن نَّشَأْ نُنَزِّلْ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ آيَةً
If we wish, we can send down a sign from the sky to them
إِن لَّمْ تَجِدُوا فِيهَا أَحَدًا فَلَا تَدْخُلُوهَا
If you find no one inside, still do not enter it
إِن يُكَذِّبُوكَ فَقَدْ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ
If they deny the truth of your message, so too did the people of Nuh before them
إِن يَنصُرْكُمُ اللَّهُ فَلَا غَالِبَ لَكُمْ
If God helps you, none can overcome you
إِن يَسْلُبْهُمُ الذُّبَابُ شَيْئًا لَّا يَسْتَنقِذُوهُ مِنْهُ
If a fly robs them of anything, they will not rescue it from it
إِلَّا تَصْرِفْ عَنِّي كَيْدَهُنَّ أَصْبُ إِلَيْهِنَّ
If you do not turn their wiles from me, I shall incline to them in youthful folly

  1. a) In the shart the perfect predominates.
    b) There is a single occurrence of idha lam and the jussive.
  2. If the jawab begins with a verb, the perfect predominates.
  3. Most of the examples of a negative jawab involve la, but two examples begin with the negative in and one with fa-laysa.
  4. Reversed sentences are relatively frequent with idha. However, idha is not used in reversed conditionals to provide assonance at the end of a verse.
Examples of the use of idha
إِذَا ذُكِرَ اَللهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ
Their hearts are filled with awe when God is mentioned.
إِذَا جَاءَ الْخَوْفُ رَأَيْتَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَيْكَ
When fear comes, you see them looking at you
إِذَا قَرَأْنَاهُ فَاتَّبِعْ قُرْآنَهُ
When we recite it, follow its recitation
إِذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِقَوْمٍ سُوءًا فَلَا مَرَدَّ لَهُ
When God wills ill on a people, there is no turning it back
إِذَا جَاءَهُ لَمْ يَجِدْهُ شَيْئًا
When he gets to it he finds it to be nothing
إِذَا مَا غَضِبُوا هُمْ يَغْفِرُونَ
They forgive when they are angry

There are close on sixty examples in the Qur'an where in is preceded by the particle la-, indicating that the jawab will be an oath or a strong statement.

Imma (but not imma... wa-imma, which means 'whether... or') appears always to mean 'if,.

A further form of conditional, in which the shart is introduced by an imperative and the jawab by a jussive, is reasonably prominent in the Qur'an:
ذَرُونَا نَتَّبِعْكُمْ
let us follow you
أَوْفُوا بِعَهْدِي أُوفِ بِعَهْدِكُمْ
Fulfil [your] covenant with me and I will fulfil [my] covenant with you
أَلْقُوهُ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِ أَبِي يَأْتِ بَصِيرًا
Throw it over my father’s face, and he will see again

Number of words have the force of a conditional particle when they have a general sense, when they are followed by conditional sentence structures. When man and ma mean 'whoever' and 'whatever* respectively, and they appear at the beginning of a sentence, conditional tenses come into play.
Examples of quasi-conditionals
مَنْ يَشَاءِ اَللهُ يُضْلِلْهُ
God sends astray those whom He wishes.
كُلَّمَا أَوْقَدُوا نَارًا لِّلْحَرْبِ أَطْفَأَهَا اللَّهُ
Whenever the light a fire for war, God will extinguish it
أَيَّمَا الْأَجَلَيْنِ قَضَيْتُ فَلَا عُدْوَانَ عَلَيَّ
Whichever of the two terms I fulfil, it will be no injustice to me
مَهْمَا تَأْتِنَا بِهِ مِنْ آيَةٍ... فَمَا نَحْنُ لَكَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ
Whatever sign you bring us… we will not put our faith in you
كُلُوا مِنْهَا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمْ
Eat of it wherever you will
حَيْثُ مَا كُنتُمْ فَوَلُّوا وُجُوهَكُمْ شَطْرَهُ
Wherever you may be, turn your faces towards it
فَأْتُوا حَرْثَكُمْ أَنَّىٰ شِئْتُمْ
Go to your tillage however you wish
أَيْنَمَا تَكُونُوا يُدْرِككُّمُ الْمَوْتُ
Wherever you are, death will overtake you

And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful.
And among the People of the Scripture is he who, if you entrust him with a great amount [of wealth], he will return it to you. And among them is he who, if you entrust him with a [single] silver coin, he will not return it to you unless you are constantly standing over him [demanding it]. That is because they say, "There is no blame upon us concerning the unlearned." And they speak untruth about Allah while they know [it].
فَإِن كَذَّبُوكَ فَقَدْ كُذِّبَ رُسُلٌ مِّن قَبْلِكَ جَآءُو بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ وَٱلزُّبُرِ وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ٱلْمُنِيرِ
Then if they deny you, [O Muhammad] - so were messengers denied before you, who brought clear proofs and written ordinances and the enlightening Scripture.
إِن تَجْتَنِبُوا۟ كَبَآئِرَ مَا تُنْهَوْنَ عَنْهُ نُكَفِّرْ عَنكُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمْ وَنُدْخِلْكُم مُّدْخَلًا كَرِيمًا
If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins and admit you to a noble entrance [into Paradise].
[They are] avid listeners to falsehood, devourers of [what is] unlawful. So if they come to you, [O Muhammad], judge between them or turn away from them. And if you turn away from them - never will they harm you at all. And if you judge, judge between them with justice. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

قَالَ قَآئِلٌ مِّنْهُمْ لَا تَقْتُلُوا۟ يُوسُفَ وَأَلْقُوهُ فِى غَيَـٰبَتِ ٱلْجُبِّ يَلْتَقِطْهُ بَعْضُ ٱلسَّيَّارَةِ إِن كُنتُمْ فَـٰعِلِينَ
Said a speaker among them, "Do not kill Joseph but throw him into the bottom of the well; some travelers will pick him up - if you would do [something]."
وَهُزِّىٓ إِلَيْكِ بِجِذْعِ ٱلنَّخْلَةِ تُسَـٰقِطْ عَلَيْكِ رُطَبًا جَنِيًّا
And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.
أَرْسِلْهُ مَعَنَا غَدًا يَرْتَعْ وَيَلْعَبْ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ
Send him with us tomorrow that he may eat well and play. And indeed, we will be his guardians.
And to the Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. This is the she-camel of Allah [sent] to you as a sign. So leave her to eat within Allah 's land and do not touch her with harm, lest there seize you a painful punishment.
تُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَتُجَـٰهِدُونَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ بِأَمْوَٰلِكُمْ وَأَنفُسِكُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
[It is that] you believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you, if you should know.
وَقَالُوا۟ لَن يَدْخُلَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ إِلَّا مَن كَانَ هُودًا أَوْ نَصَـٰرَىٰ ۗ تِلْكَ أَمَانِيُّهُمْ ۗ قُلْ هَاتُوا۟ بُرْهَـٰنَكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
And they say, "None will enter Paradise except one who is a Jew or a Christian." That is [merely] their wishful thinking, Say, "Produce your proof, if you should be truthful."
وَإِذَا تَوَلَّىٰ سَعَىٰ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيُفْسِدَ فِيهَا وَيُهْلِكَ ٱلْحَرْثَ وَٱلنَّسْلَ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلْفَسَادَ
And when he goes away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein and destroy crops and animals. And Allah does not like corruption.
And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.
And if Allah were to impose blame on the people for their wrongdoing, He would not have left upon the earth any creature, but He defers them for a specified term. And when their term has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it].
قُلْ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِهِۦٓ أَوْ لَا تُؤْمِنُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْعِلْمَ مِن قَبْلِهِۦٓ إِذَا يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ يَخِرُّونَ لِلْأَذْقَانِ سُجَّدًا
Say, "Believe in it or do not believe. Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it - when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration,
The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
لَوْ يَجِدُونَ مَلْجَـًٔا أَوْ مَغَـٰرَٰتٍ أَوْ مُدَّخَلًا لَّوَلَّوْا۟ إِلَيْهِ وَهُمْ يَجْمَحُونَ
If they could find a refuge or some caves or any place to enter [and hide], they would turn to it while they run heedlessly.
قَـٰلَ إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ۖ لَّوْ أَنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
He will say, "You stayed not but a little - if only you had known.
O you who have believed, do not be like those who disbelieved and said about their brothers when they traveled through the land or went out to fight, "If they had been with us, they would not have died or have been killed," so Allah makes that [misconception] a regret within their hearts. And it is Allah who gives life and causes death, and Allah is Seeing of what you do.
وَيُرِيكُمْ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ فَأَىَّ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ تُنكِرُونَ
And He shows you His signs. So which of the signs of Allah do you deny?
Have you not considered that Allah knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth? There is in no private conversation three but that He is the fourth of them, nor are there five but that He is the sixth of them - and no less than that and no more except that He is with them [in knowledge] wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did, on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allah is, of all things, Knowing.
But as for those who defiantly disobeyed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to emerge from it, they will be returned to it while it is said to them, "Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny."
مَّنْ عَمِلَ صَـٰلِحًا فَلِنَفْسِهِۦ ۖ وَمَنْ أَسَآءَ فَعَلَيْهَا ۗ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِظَلَّـٰمٍ لِّلْعَبِيدِ
Whoever does righteousness - it is for his [own] soul; and whoever does evil [does so] against it. And your Lord is not ever unjust to [His] servants.
And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah or says, "It has been inspired to me," while nothing has been inspired to him, and one who says, "I will reveal [something] like what Allah revealed." And if you could but see when the wrongdoers are in the overwhelming pangs of death while the angels extend their hands, [saying], "Discharge your souls! Today you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation for what you used to say against Allah other than the truth and [that] you were, toward His verses, being arrogant."
Say, "Have you considered: if the Qur'an was from Allah, and you disbelieved in it while a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something similar and believed while you were arrogant...?" Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ
He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَظْلِمُ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ ۖ وَإِن تَكُ حَسَنَةً يُضَـٰعِفْهَا وَيُؤْتِ مِن لَّدُنْهُ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا
Indeed, Allah does not do injustice, [even] as much as an atom's weight; while if there is a good deed, He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward.
